Review – Hillgrove Hotel Monaghan

I took a trip to the Hillgrove Hotel in Monaghan last week. I knew very little about this hotel apart from the fact that it was in Monaghan. During my time there I came to realise that there is so much more to this venue.

The decor is very distinctive, quirky, vibrant and possibly not to everyone’s taste. If you are looking for a country house hotel then this won’t be the venue for you BUT if you are looking for something unique, young and fun….this will be right up your alley. There is an artist theme running through the hotel you will see suites named Rembrant and Van Gogh. The big purple chair outside the hotel is made by a local sculpture. If you look closely at some of the art in lobby, you will see that pictures of the staff and customers make up the pictures. What a great idea.

This family owned four star hotel comes highly recommended. As soon as I mentioned that I was visiting the Hillgrove Hotel, mountains of positive comments came in on Facebook. Everyone raved about the service.

Well, they were right. The service is absolutely super. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, the staff are so natural, friendly and clearly happy in what they are doing. I never once felt like I was getting the ‘scripted’ arrival schpeal!

When it comes to weddings, they are pro’s. Their secret weapon is Linda, wedding coordinator extraordinaire. I was watching a wedding behind the scenes and there was no stone left unturned. She runs a very tight ship and as a bride and groom, you are in very safe hands. At one stage I spotted her outside the door teaching the grooms men how to dance for their entrance in to the room. Clearly there is no ask to big or small in Linda’s books. I also loved the full wedding team’s dedication to weddings. I got a real sense of love for weddings from everyone I met. The bride and the groom couldn’t have looked happier on the night.

You have plenty of options available in terms of wedding packages and suites. There are 2 main suites and they are adaptable pending the size of your wedding. The colour schemes can be customised to suit your wedding theme. The décor is very neutral should you wish to add your own touches.

The packages are really straight forward and the price point is pretty compelling. Their prices start from €34 per head. This is amazing value as let me tell you, the food and service is top notch! They have also won numerous wedding awards.

When you are thinking about booking a wedding, after budget considerations, you will start to think about your guests enjoyment. The Hillgrove is a fantastic leisure retreat. If I was going to a wedding here I would definitely book two nights. I couldn’t get over how family friendly it is. You can see that the team and owners really understand families in particular. There is a full kid’s entertainment schedule running during the summer. I travelled with my baby and we were in heaven as we had access to the pool. I also took in some relaxation in Lir Spa. I had a manicure and it has lasted a week so far! I didn’t even go for Shellac!

Lir Spa is a real winner for your guests. If you are getting married here, you and your bridal party can get make up and beauty bits done. They have very reasonably priced packages and the girls are fantastic. It is also a great spot for a hen party. The Thermal Spa is a great relaxation zone. There are so many treatment areas to ensure that you are pampered. The Rasul is a must and next time I go back I will be hitting this. It’s a mud bath! How much fun would that be if you were travelling with the girls!

Our room was so spacious. The décor is very light and airy. It’s different from the strong décor in the public areas. The rooms are very reasonably priced for guests attending weddings. I know that this can be a bone of contention for so many but at least your guests have access to the leisure facilities when they stay. Nothing beats a dip in the pool after a night of dancing!

Overall, I would highly recommend this venue. As mentioned earlier, the décor is not going to be for everyone and that’s perfectly ok!
