I took some time out to talk with wedding planner extraordinaire Sue Egan of Special Days. She specialises in weddings in Spain and for those wishing to come to Ireland. I’ll be talking to you about ‘Coming Home’ weddings in another post.
For those of you that aren’t familiar with Nerja, it’s a popular Spanish town in the Costa Del Sol. You’ve beaches, cliffs , a river and mountains surrounding you. It is a pretty spectacular location.
The ‘Balcon de Europa’ is a big attraction for Irish couples as this is the famous focal point but it makes for a stunning backdrop for a wedding ceremony. What you may find is that guests attending your wedding here will end up making a holiday out of it as it is very amenable with plenty to see and do. The nearest Airport is Malaga and the flights are pretty reasonable. Once landed in Malaga, your guests can rent a car or there is an underground service from the airport to the city centre and then from the city centre you can get a bus to Nerja.
I had so many questions about getting married in Spain in general. The main burning question I had was the whole legalities of actually getting married.
Sue explained that if you choose to do a Catholic ceremony, Nerja is very welcoming as it can facilitate weddings in ‘Church El Salvador’. However, there is a one year waiting list for this church.
Most couples opt to do a civil ceremony at home and then have a celebrant service in Nerja. Sue has a celebrant that can marry you with or without a religious aspect.
The next item on my agenda was how does the booking process work as I know many couples that dealt with planners on the ground. They had to make numerous trips before they even booked. Sue is based in Ireland so she does the initial screening to gauge what would suit the couple best so that there is a more productive usage of their time when they get to Nerja.
Typically, if you were going abroad, your first meeting with the planner would be when you arrive at the first venue to view. The good thing about meeting in advance of getting on that plane is that your likes/dislikes etc can be creased out.
The worst part is then trying to get from the airport to the venue. Now, I don’t know about you and your partners but myself and my husband kill each other when we are under the pressure of driving in a foreign country with no clue as to where we are going. The lovely Sue meets you at the airport and brings you to the venues. That solves the problem of needing a divorce before you’re even married!
When you go through the initial meeting with Sue, she will establish the venues that might be the best fit for you and your guests. She deals with a wide portfolio of venues from Hotels, Villas, Restaurants and Bars.
Once you select the dates, location and ceremony, Sue keeps you on track and plans a timeline but overall there is a very little required from the couple. Sue has contacts for all aspects including photographer, videographer, hair & make up, band, DJ….you name it. You literally have nothing to do but enjoy your wedding day.
